“You, donkey and me” 2019, oil on canvas, 180 x 200 cm.
Growing up in north-eastern China, I often saw the groom ride a donkey to welcome the bride to their new home. Donkey is the bridge of love, bringing lovers together. The blindly hard-working and stubborn characteristics of a donkey resonate with me. In both paintings, I see the donkey from a distance. The former is in the absence of the lover; the latter shows the shadow of the lover riding a donkey: respectively showing the desperation and anxiety of waiting.
