“Yellow Sweep” 2018, oil on canvas, 180 x 200 cm.
“Big Yellow Sweep”, 2018, shows the scene where the police are closing down a residential building due to “hooliganism” based on the series of brutal events of 1983 Nationwide Crackdown in China. During this time, women were sentenced to death for having nonmarital sex or even flirtatious behaviours. I see the anti-desire and inhuman political environment at the time as a symbol of my personal mental space when dealing with shame, punishment and public humiliation. Personally, the painting could also be seen as a mental state; each character symbolises a string of thought.
